beyerdynamic introduces a new generation of premium studio headphones with newly developed TESLA.45 driver
HEILBRONN, GERMANY - 29th October 2024 - The German audio specialist is set to release the next generation of its popular premium studio headphones with the DT 1770 PRO MKII in closed-back design and the DT 1990 PRO MKII in open-back design. At the heart of both models is the TESLA.45 driver, which has been newly developed and manufactured in Heilbronn.
Refined sound for modern productions
The first generation of the two studio headphones already combined everything that beyerdynamic stands for: excellent sound, optimum wearing comfort and reference-setting manufacturing quality Made in Germany. The second generation comes with many improvements and is the perfect choice for today’s music production.
Thanks to the closed-back design, the DT 1770 PRO MKII headphones are ideal for recording, monitoring and editing. The lively sound profile features powerful and deep bass. Mids are reproduced transparently, while highs are rendered in rich detail.
“It is particularly important both in the vocal cabin and when recording instruments that the artist feels comfortable”, stresses Product Manager Kevin Nietsch. “This often intangible aspect can turn a good track into an excellent one”, continues Nietsch. “The DT 1770 PRO MKII therefore has a sound profile that is fun, but at the same time always remains detailed and precise.”
Due to its open-back design, the DT 1990 PRO MKII offers a natural, spatial sound quality and is ideal for professional mixing, mastering and editing. In terms of sound, the reference headphones impress with a precise and far-reaching bass playback for open-back headphones. Compared to the previous model, the highs at around 8 kilohertz have been slightly reduced. At the same time, the detailed highs from 10 kilohertz of the predecessor have been retained, which helps avoid wrong decisions in the mix. In addition, the selected sound signature prevents ear fatigue during long studio sessions. Thanks to three-dimensional sound reproduction, instruments and voices are easy to identify. Equipped with an impedance of 30 ohms, both studio headphones deliver studio sound on different devices.
“With the DT 1990 PRO MKII, we had a very balanced sound in mind”, explains Ante Mihalj, the acoustic engineer in charge. “Modern productions often have very complex treble frequencies. That’s why the DT 1990 PRO MKII now reproduces trebles a little more smoothly than its somewhat brasher predecessor”, adds Mihalj.
The new driving force – TESLA.45
The driving force behind the excellent sound quality is the TESLA.45 driver, which has been newly developed and manufactured in Heilbronn. Thanks to the optimised neodymium magnet, a magnetic flux density of more than one tesla is achieved in the air gap of the magnetic system. The TESLA.45 driver can therefore be described as particularly powerful. Thanks to the structurally optimised diaphragm, the total harmonic distortion and the impulse behaviour have been noticeably improved compared to its predecessor. This results in a clearer sound, even at high volumes. The diaphragm made of high-performance polymer PEEK ensures precise bass reproduction. The refined treble-frequency profile is achieved by a weight-reduced voice coil made of aluminium-coated copper wire. To guarantee consistent quality at all times, the drivers are measured several times during the various production steps.
Designed for long studio sessions
Both headphone models are designed for several hours of use in the studio. At the heart of the mechanical design is the hard-wearing spring steel headband construction, which has been tried and tested for decades. Heat build-up is avoided thanks to the velour ear pads. The headband is made from a combination of soft memory foam and hard-wearing leatherette. Thanks to the new fontanelle recess, potentially pain-sensitive areas on the head are avoided. Both the headband and the ear pads can be replaced if necessary. Both models are handcrafted at the company’s site in Heilbronn.
Professional-level scope of delivery
Two different sets of ear pads are included with both studio headphones to meet the demands of modern music production. The velour ear pads that come with the DT 1770 PRO MKII offer outstanding wearing comfort, while the leatherette ear pads impress with their high level of sound insulation. The Producing Velours fitted as standard on the DT 1990 PRO MKII ensure three-dimensional sound reproduction thanks to a slight bass boost. Meanwhile, the Mixing & Mastering Velours offer analytical reference sound. Both models are supplied with a 3-metre detachable cable and a 5-metre spiral cable, each equipped with a lockable 3-pin mini-XLR connector. The DT 1770 PRO MKII and DT 1990 PRO MKII are safely stored in a high-quality hard case.
